BioBeer, la cerveza que cura


En la universidad de Rice trabajan en la creación de "BioBeer" con la levadura de la cerveza modificada genéticamente que ayudaría a prevenir enfermedades

Thomas Segall-Shapiro, un estudiante de la Universidad Rice en Estados Unidos, con tan sólo 20 años trabaja en este proyecto que empezó como un chiste y demostró no serlo: desarrollar una cerveza sanadora.

Al parecer, la levadura de la cerveza modificada genéticamente para producir resveratrol podría combatir las enfermedades del corazón, la diabetes y hasta prevenir el cáncer.

El producto se llama "BioBeer", luego de que decidieran darle un nombre más comercial que el original ´Frankenbeer´. Si bien todavía no la han desarrollado como bebida que pueda ser comercializada, lo cierto es que sólo el mayor de los integrantes del equipo tiene edad legal para beberla.

Cuando les preguntaron por qué eligieron la cerveza la respuesta de Taylor Stevenson, miembro del equipo, dijo: por año los americanos consumen 80 litros de cerveza per cápita. Mientras que para el vino el número es de 9 litros y medio.
